An Exploration into the idea of Trauma-informed Touch

    About the workshop:

This workshop is perfect for professionals who utilize touch in there daily practice or those interested in exploring how touch might fit into their practice in a safe and appropriate way. In this workshop, we will explore the realm of touch from a trauma-informed perspective. Participants will explore their own relationship to touch, in order to inform their personal perspectives and comfort levels and to create a space that honors the needs of everyone involved. We will also explore some of the science behind how touch works and the existing research related to the mechanisms of touch. There will be an introduction and exploration into the 10 trauma-informed principles created to help change the culture around touch to one that considers the diversity in how it is experienced with an emphasis on how to promote safety and consent.

    About the presenter:

Carrie standing in front of sunflowersCarrie Burnett is a licensed professional massage therapist who has received training from the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. She has been working with trauma survivors using somatic experiencing and massage therapy since 2017. Additionally, Carrie spent a year researching early life trauma and touch at Webster University in 2018-2019. Through her experiences training, working with people and doing research Carrie has curated this information to try to inspire conversation around the topic of touch and trauma, to contribute to and collaborate on creating safer spaces for survivors of trauma in our world. Carrie’s hope is that her findings and this workshop are just the beginning of a very important synthesis of professional input on the topic of trauma-informed touch.
